Sydney’s Band of Gold

Friends & Family,

The team at Crush Brands wanted to let you all know a little about what’s going on with us!

We have been working with an organization called the Cure Starts Now Texas for the past few months in helping them get ready for their biggest event of the year, Sydney’s Band of Gold gala. We were introduced to them through one of our amazing clients, Amy Vanderoef. Amy brought this organization to our attention as the emcee for the gala and an integral part of their recent success; we were immediately drawn to get involved. They are a federal non-profit 501(c)(3) status, 100% of proceeds go to research for pediatric brain cancer, primarily DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) which is a highly aggressive brain tumor in children.

CB is honored to be a platinum sponsor of the event.

This event is a night to honor Sydney Bjornberg, daughter of Michelle & Steve, sister to Nicholas. Sydney was just 11 when she was diagnosed with DIPG. A happy little girl who loved her family, friends, and Taylor Swift. Her tumor worked much faster than any scientist could and ultimately she succumbed to the disease.  Even more heartbreaking, mortality rates have been unchanged in the last decade as research has not progressed at all.

Let’s change that together!

As a sponsor we have a few tables for our guests, so if you are interested contact September 26th at 6:00pm.

If you are less of a gala person and are more of a golfer, consider coming out at 8:00am

Beating the Summer Beer Belly

“Summer time fine” rings through our ears from Memorial Day till the end of Labor Day. An excessive amount of bikinis, crop tops, dresses, and tastefully short skirts are essential. The only problem is, summer also brings days filled with happy hours and BBQ’s. This combo is not usually friendly to your hot physique. Some of the calories in our favorite cocktails are out of this world. Lucky for you, we made a cheat sheet of drinks that will make sure you don’t back track all of your hard work in the gym.

Margarita= 254 Calories

Besides beer, margaritas are without a doubt the hardest drink to give up this summer. Frozen margaritas may seem like the perfect way to cool off, until you are four deep and have racked up 1,016 calories. Most of which is PURE sugar.

Pina Colada= 242 Calories

If you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain…..good song and all but if you want to rock that two piece, you’ll have put away the personal ad.

Daiquiri= 229 Calories

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if there is an umbrella in your drink, you might as well chase it with a chocolate bar.

Sangria= 175 Calories

A combination of red wine, fruit juice, and fresh fruit equals traditional Sangria. The added sugar in Sangria is what accounts for the calorie boost.

Mojito= 169 Calories

The fresh mint used in the Mojito has its own advantages. Mint is used to ease headaches and can help fight off the common cold. Could be a hangover cure in the making, if you don’t mind a few extra calories.

Beer = 145 Calories

If you are two beers and done, 145 calories each isn’t that bad. If you plan on more than that it can really add up.

Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 9.50.09 AM

Red Wine= 125 Calories White Wine= 121 Calories

Light Beer= 110 calories

We would recommend refraining from beer this summer, but if you must enjoy a cold one, make it a light one

2 Shots

Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 10.02.08 AM

Vodka Soda= 96 calories

When you are out and about Vodka Soda is your friend. While you might get the occasional “are you drinking water” it will be worth it!

CB TIP: Choose a vodka soda over a vodka tonic any day. Tonic, unlike club soda contains 130 calories per 12 ounces. PASS!

Screen Shot 2015-05-15 at 9.51.09 AM

Champagne= 96 calories *CB Summer Favorite*

You can buy a bottle for fewer than twenty dollars at your local liquor store and not have to carry around the extra “weight.” The downside to drinking a lot of champagne is the hangover.

P.S- Prosecco (102 Calories) is often disguised as champagne but is more fattening because of the added sugar.

Happy summer drinking! Be safe and always remember, don’t text and drink 😉

Twitter, don’t silence those that don’t have a voice.

Really interesting article about Twitter having problems with the balance of anonymity:

They want to try and keep people safe in the Wild Wild West, that is Twitter, but the flip side would be catastrophic.

The essence of Twitter is how it connects the world, and allows us all to be civilian journalists. Cracking down on Tor users silences those who need a voice most.  Tor helps to keep websites from tracking users locations. Their services let users publish web sites and other content without needing to reveal the location of the site.

This is a very controversial topic, but for now we stand on the side of Anonymous.

Not Just Another Face In The Crowd

Dallas Supercross

Not five seconds into the race and our hearts are pounding & my brother, Cade Clason, wheels are already rubber side up….here is how it feels to watch your loved one perform in one of the most physically demanding & dangerous sports in the world, Supercross.

Cade & I

You see the riders get pumped up on the starting line….well that process starts in the car, on the way to the track. For Dallas SX it was all about the Uptown Funk!

Screen Shot 2015-02-20 at 6.05.07 PM

Team Gurrnaid Energy

As a sister, once I get to the track I know my role. I know when it comes to me and race days, I am on food patrol. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle & bustle of the racing and practice. If Cade isn’t reminded to eat he won’t and for anyone who knows him this is probably shocking news.

AT&T Stadium Entrance

In Supercross, the day starts with three practices, the first is a free practice, the second two are timed, and it is important to get your fastest laps in to qualify for the “night show.” Sitting in the stands watching practice is not as nerve racking as the actual race. There aren’t that many people in the stands, and it is more of a calm environment. The most nerve racking part of practice is watching the lap times on the big screen.

Screen Shot 2015-02-20 at 6.14.56 PM

Dallas SX Press Day

Cade & his trainer Brandon Haas, from ClubMX

Once the lights go down and the smoke starts billowing, that’s when the nerves kick in. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I know that it’s the good kind of nerves. People are cheering, yelling, and can’t wait for the gate to drop.

Dallas Opening Ceremonies

Cade says that the nerves on the starting line are the good kind. For me sitting in the stands, it is the OMG-holy-shit that’s a small first turn for twenty two riders to be charging toward. The roar of the crowd is usually an exciting thing. The worst feeling is sitting in the crowd & hearing them gasp. I instantly look twice to make sure that Cade is still on two wheels. 90% of the time I can sigh in relief, but the other 10% of the time, when I am waiting for him to get up, the worst.

Sister, Aunt, Friend, Grandma, Friend

An everyday person would think “why would you support a sport that could potentially leave you broken or even worse.” Supercross is one of the most physically demanding & dangerous sports in the world. However, what we would say to those people is you get nerves as a family member watching, but for most that have been around the sport for years, they know there is no place for nerves. This is what your rider loves to do; he could just as easily get hurt driving to the race, as he could when racing in it. Crashes are part of the sport & so is banging bars (racing battle) and throwing big whips (jumping big jumps.)

Screen Shot 2015-02-20 at 6.15.08 PM

Crash in Dallas

When Cade raced in Dallas, he did not have a great night. He had some crashes and a pile up in the first turn. Each time he got up, brushed it off, and got back on his bike. Those split seconds while Cade is on the ground…pure torture. However once he gets up I take a sigh of relief & breath easy. That is the determination & strength that he has to bring to every race because Supercross is full of highs & lows.

Cade with his whole family after the race

At the end of the day, nothing beats the sport of Supercross & the family you gain from it. It takes a village to support someone at this level; whether it is mechanics, brothers, sisters, or teammates. I have made life long friends while supporting Cade across the country, and nothing beats seeing him make his dreams a reality.

Gone but still growing.

As fans continue to follow and support the social media accounts of their greatest icons, social media managers will be on the other side of the computer. Not to take the authenticity away, but to preserve it.

Celebrities Facebook walls, Instagram comments, and tweets become filled with thoughts and memories after their passing. Recent social media posts are remembered as some of their last personal thoughts. However, the truth is their brand will continue to live on without them and their social media will continue to be an outlet for their brand to grow.

Celebrities like Joan Rivers, Donna Summer, & Michael Jackson have only seen increases in their digital real estate post death. This goes to show the bond between celebrities and their fans is an everlasting one.

Screen Shot 2014-12-23 at 5.06.34 AM

Celebrities are known for their public personas, so it’s understandable that their deaths evoke displays of public mourning and a need to cling on to what they have left behind, specifically their social media & their brand.

Screen Shot 2014-12-22 at 2.22.58 PM

When celebrities pass away, they often attract more media attention than while alive. Their death appears to strongly elevate the celebrity’s status and increase the value of their products and digital real estate.

Forbes estimates Michael Jackson who passed away in 2009 earned $160 million in 2014 alone. Elvis Presley who passed in 1977 had a net worth of 14 million when he died and he now earns about $50 million every year. Not to mention the fact that Elvis was not present in a social media age, he has still acquired 12 million fans on Facebook for a social media manager to be able to continue to promote his brand.

Screen Shot 2014-12-22 at 2.25.39 PM

When a shocking death happens in the midst of a new movie release such as: Night At The Museum: Secret of the Tomb (Robin Williams), Batman (Heath Ledger), Fast and the Furious (Paul Walker), and The Hunger Games (Philip Seymour) there becomes a large need from the fans to see their last movie.

Night At The Museum: Secret of the Tomb has already earned Robin Williams $17 million in its debut weekend. The NATM movies have always done well, but the un-timely death of this comedian & actor has sent an overwhelming boost of movies sales to see his last movie.

Screen Shot 2014-12-22 at 2.34.51 PM

To the fans the relationship with their favorite celebrities is as real and intimate as any relationship can be. For them social media is a connection to the life that once was their favorite celebrity. Fans choose to hinge on any post or comment made by that account, as it’s their way of holding on to their memory and continuing to be involved with that celebrity’s brand.

The continuing following by the fans leads the accounts social media manager who  knows the in’s and outs of their past clients, they know their likes and dislikes because they are now continuing on their clients voice on social media and promoting their brand.

Joan Rivers, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and Robin Williams can & will continue to shape the values, attitudes, and personalities of fans even after their death.

Just putting it out there…PET PEEVES.

We all have them. It is about time someone spoke up.

8 Confessions of a Youth World has-been.

Two weeks ago 35 world champions were named. There were tears of joy, tears of disappointment, trainers & parents cheering their hearts out from the stands, and hugs in the middle of the arena before they announced the world champion. The AQHYA World Show can be a defining moment for many kids in the horse world and this past year was no exception.

The Built Ford Tough American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show is the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse exhibitors, ages 18 and under, around the world, who must qualify for the event by earning a predetermined number of points to compete in each of the classes representing halter, english and western disciplines.images

The AQHYA world show is fueled by the blood, sweat, and tears of youth from around the world, hard working trainers, and the parents that support this life changing, fast paced lifestyle that is showing American Quarter Horses.

Once the process of earning enough points to qualify for the show is done; that is when the real preparation begins. For the youth who show horses it’s all about being the last one standing in the coveted Jim Norick Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (for us has-beens it could be Fort Worth or Tulsa 😉

Parents and their kids spend all year traveling across the country to earn enough points to qualify for the world show. Then spend the summer days traveling to horse shows and their trainer’s houses for “riding boot camps.” All of the efforts these kids make from September to the Next August when the next world show is held, shape the results.

While most sports are based on your personal condition and did you work hard enough, did you train your body enough. When it comes to showing horses not only do you have to work on your riding, you have to prepare a thousand plus pound animal to be in sync with you. For riders to be successful the bond between horse and rider has to be one that can’t be broken. Any has-been youth that has had success will tell you that you have to learn your horses moods and know when and how far you can push them. They will also tell you that once a bond between horse and rider is created….the results are amazing.

Another important element of competing at the AQHYA World Show is the team you have around you. Supportive parents & horse trainers that have been with you every step of the way; pushing both you and your horse to be the best you can be.

At the horse shows there is events all daylong; so the arena’s that the competitors show in are unavailable for practice. This means middle of the night ridding sessions.

Long days and short nights of sleep…that is the name of the game at the AQHYA world show. This is not a sport for lazy workers and there is also more to it than winning world championships.

For the girls, this sport has the potential to earn them a division one athletic scholarship. Consider the amount of money these families put into the sport to compete. The potential to have a college scholarship is an amazing opportunity.

The harsh reality however for the Youth who have spent most of their adolescent career competing around the world is that once the dust settles at your last youth world, you would give just about anything to go back and spend those long hours at the barn.

So we have the brutally honest confessions of the has-beens….

  1. We all yelled at our parents at the stalls…….truth is they were forking out the dough just so we MIGHT have the chance to make the finals.
  2. As has-beens we don’t know anyone at the horse shows since we went off to college…..and the new “Youth” have NO IDEA who we are.
  3. Don’t take for granted those 3am rides drilling the same pattern over and over again…we would gladly swap places with you.
  4. All of your friends back home think we are just at another “race.” And at this point we have all given up trying to explain we DON’T actually race our horses!
  5. Best way to get over a bad ride…..a cinnamon roll from the sweet shop.
  6. Every has-been has a story from when we got “screwed by the judges” and didn’t get in the finals. It’s a broken record but we have all been there.
  7. Use the WHOLE ARENA for your victory lap. Or we will be judging heavily from the stands. Also if you could shed a few tears that would be good to 😉
  8. Competing at the youth world was our glory days.

So whether this is your first youth world or you are going back to visit four years later…these are memories and friends you will have forever and once it’s over you can’t go back. So make it count and ENJOY every minute.
